Beginning Handbuilding, Monday Evening (Studio 2)

Continue to explore your hand building skills with projects that involve forms and stiff slab construction; butter dishes, planters, and boxes can reflect your style and design choices through the use of underglazes, carving tools, and other finishing and coloring options.  These projects are designed to build directly upon what you have learned up to this point while challenging you to find new and creative ways to develop your creativity.

Week 1:  butter dishes.  Explore various forms and templates for making a pair of pieces that fit and look like a pair or set.

Week 2:  four-sided vase.  Explore the advantages of preparing slabs to use in stiff slab construction.   Relative and unique forms are made from templates you create.

Week 3:  planters.  Indoors or outdoors, and all shapes and sizes, we will explore the aspects of making things for plants.

Week 4:  lidded box.  Use stuff slabs and texture to create a unique box with a shaped lid, exploring handles, feet, and finial options.

Week 5:  wall face sculpture.  Have fun creating this project involving a sculpted face, focusing on proper building and carving techniques, as well as mounting options.

Week 6:  glazing class.  We will look at underglaze, stains, and wash options and also explore some popular commercial glazing techniques.

Participants must be at least 18 years old.

Students will be given one 2-hour session of open studio access per week, during hours the store is open.
